Guinea Pigs can be housed indoors or outdoors
but I would urge people to keep their guinea pigs out of direct
draughts and high weather conditions. That said and done if you
choose to house your guinea pig outside please consider housing
them in a shed.
If you choose to house your guinea pig
indoors there are a fabulous range of plastic hutches with wire
or plastic tops – In my experience wire sides are the best
as it gives you informal opportunities to gel with your guinea
pig.
My personal preference is to house my guinea
pigs indoors during the winter months (oct – april) and
out in our well ventilated shed over the summer months (may –
sept).
Bedding – We use newspaper, wood
pellets, and bedding hay (which we top up each day).
Some people find that their guinea's are
allergic to wood shavings, in my mind its actually the dust which
affects the guinea's – dust in their eyes or when foraging
may eat unnecessary particulars.
Always provide somewhere for your guinea
pig to seek shelter – again I have found it better, when
your guinea is young refrain from putting a house in, rather a
tube or tunnel as it brings your guinea pig out of their shell
quicker.
